Staff Attorney

  • Location: CAIR-Houston, TX
  • Term: Full-time, occasional evening and weekends required
  • Position Status: Exempt
  • Pay Range: $75,000 – $93,000

About the Role

CAIR-Houston is seeking a highly motivated staff attorney with a demonstrated commitment to civil rights, public interest advocacy, and serving diverse communities. The ideal candidate will have experience in civil rights law and a passion for representing and advocating on behalf of marginalized communities, particularly the American Muslim community. This role offers the opportunity to address systemic discrimination and use creative legal and grassroots advocacy strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and investigate legal claims brought by community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Conduct legal intakes and assist individuals facing civil rights violations.
  • Manage a caseload of approximately 200+ legal intakes per year
  • Assist with litigation efforts, including drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents
  • Identify, develop, and manage litigation efforts depending on experience
  • Perform in-depth legal research and analysis
  • Draft legal complaints, discovery requests, letters, memos, and other legal documents
  • Engage in community education and outreach efforts, including know-your-rights presentations
  • Work with coalition partners and community organizations to further advocacy efforts
  • Assist in general CAIR-Houston office tasks,  including outreach, fundraising, and other duties as required
  • Participate in community events, coalition meetings, and outreach programs
Qualifications
  • Law degree from an American Bar Association accredited school
  • Admission to the Texas State Bar
  • 1-3+ years of experience representing clients in areas such as civil rights, employment law, and religious discrimination
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Experience in public interest law or civil rights advocacy preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking experience
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to civil rights and CAIR’s mission of promoting justice and mutual understanding
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Proficiency in Office 365, OneDrive, and Westlaw Next
  • Access to a vehicle and the ability to travel throughout the Greater Houston area with the additional ability to travel across Texas via car or airline
  • Conversational proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, or Urdu is preferred but not required
