Government Affairs Internship

Location: Preferred Houston; those residing in Austin and DFW welcome and encouraged to apply
Reports To: Civic Engagement Organizer

Position Overview

The Government Affairs intern will work closely with the CAIR Texas Civic Engagement Organizer to fulfill government relations, communications and administrative functions. CAIR Texas; expanding government affairs department coordinates statewide advocacy work on issues of public policy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct legislative research and policy analysis on issues facing the Texas Muslim community
  • Participate in grass roots Get Out the Vote campaigns and community engagement
  • Attend and summarize hearings and briefings at the City Council of their residing city and other government events.
  • May require infrequent travel to Austin for any statewide hearings that cannot be monitored virtually.
    Assist the department in tracking legislation
  • Participate in grass roots Get Out the Vote campaigns and community

  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Be enrolled in college or be a recent graduate with a bachelor’s degree in government, public policy, international relations, or another related field
  • Previous government or advocacy experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of legislative processes
  • Possesses excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to write quickly and effectively under deadline
  • Demonstrates follow-through and time management skills with assigned tasks
Compensation

Compensation
Selected participants will receive a monthly stipend of $500-$1,000 (depending on the number of interns selected).
