May 9, 2023 | Texas Press Releases
(HOUSTON, TX, 5/9/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy, today welcomed the renaming of Fort Hood in Texas.
The fort, which had been named Confederate General John Bell Hood, will be renamed Fort Cavazos, after a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and the first Latino to reach the rank of general in the US Army.

“We look forward to the new history this name change will bring our state and reaffirm our call for our nation’s military to change the names of bases across the United States with ties to the Confederacy,” said William White, Director of CAIR-Houston
“American military bases should not be named after those who fought against our military in order to preserve slavery and divide our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome this name change and call on all remnants of the Confederacy to be removed nationwide.”
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
