Community Action Alert: CAIR-TX Houston Asks Community Members to Call on Congress to Demand UAE Release Asim Ghafoor

(Houston, TX, 7/16/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR TX-Houston), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today is asking all community to call and email members of Congress, demanding the release of Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) board member Asim Ghafoor, a Texas-raised, Virginia, based civil rights attorney who represented murdered Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi be freed from Emarati prison.

American officials say they are aware of Ghafoor’s detention but did not say whether President Joe Biden raised the issue with the UAE president when they met on the sidelines of the summit in Saudi Arabia.

HOW TO CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE:

1) Use https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative to find your representative

2) Call the DC office and leave a message for the Legislative Director.

3) In your message, tell them you would like that Congress demand the UAE release Asim Ghafoor from unlawful detention, which was given to him without due process.

4) Thank the staffer and share with your friends

In a statement, CAIR TX -Houston Director of Operations William White said:

“We are asking all Houstonians to join us in calling on members of Congress to demand the United Arab Emirates immediately release Asim Ghafoor from their custody and return him to his family safely.

“Mr. Ghafoor was raised here in Houston, so while this matter impacts many in our community locally, the Emarati government’s legacy of human rights violations and disregard for due process is nothing new.”

White noted that last month, CAIR joined Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) for the unveiling of a new street sign for “Jamal Khashoggi Way” outside of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington, D.C.
