CAIR-Texas Welcomes Guilty Plea for 2015 Anti-Muslim Murder of Man in Dallas

Sep 14, 2023 | Texas Press Releases

(DALLAS, TX, 9/14/23) – The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) today welcomed a guilty plea by a Dallas man for a 2015 bias-motivated murder of a man at a car repair shop.

Anthony Paz Torres, 38, pleaded guilty to five federal hate crime counts for killing one individual and attempting to kill four others at Omar’s Wheels and Tires in Dallas, Texas, on Dec. 24, 2015.

Torres’ shooting spree came a days after he went to the business, made anti-Muslim statements and pledged that he would come back. During the shooting attack, Torres asked customers if they were Muslim and then opened fire. Sentencing is set for Jan. 24, 2024. Torres faces a maximum penalty of up to 37 years in prison.

Last year, CAIR-DFW welcomed a federal grand jury’s indictment of Torres on hate crime charges.

“We welcome this guilty plea and look forward to a sentence that will send a strong message of deterrence to all those who would turn bigoted views into violent action,” said CAIR-Houston Director William White. “We thank law enforcement authorities for their actions in bringing this perpetrator to justice.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
