CAIR-Houston Establishes ‘John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship’ for Law School Students Pursuing Career in Civil Rights
(HOUSTON, TX, 5/16/2023) – The Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston) today announced the establishment of the John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship, a new legal Fellowship open to Law School 1 and 2L students who are passionate about pursuing a career in civil rights work.
CAIR-Houston’s fellowship offers a unique opportunity for law school students to actively engage in advocacy and effect positive change in their communities.
The John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship is designed to provide selected participants with hands-on experience in changing policies to serve the Muslim community and the larger society better and to gain access to crucial information within the field of civil rights law.
Through this internship, students will have the chance to collaborate with experienced civil rights attorneys and make a meaningful impact on the lives of countless individuals around Southeast Texas.
Named in honor of former CAIR-Houston Board Chair John Floyd, a board certified criminal defense attorney, who selflessly volunteered thousands of hours on behalf of CAIR-Houston, representing clients faced with law enforcement discrimination and challenging policies at the state and city level which are harmful to communities of color, and minorities, this fellowship expects participants to defend civil rights at the city, county and state levels of government as well as assist in case analysis and legal intakes.
William White, director of CAIR-Houston, expressed his enthusiasm for the fellowship, stating:
“The John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship is an incredible opportunity for young legal minds to contribute to advancing civil rights in our community. By participating in this fellowship, students will gain valuable experience and join the noble cause of promoting justice, equality, and inclusion for all.”
Rawan Harirah, board chair and president of CAIR-Houston, also commented on the importance of the fellowship, remarking:
“We are thrilled to launch the John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship and empower the next generation of civil rights advocates. Through this program, we aim to equip talented law students with the necessary tools and support to address the legal challenges faced by the Muslim community. Together, we can build a more equitable society where everyone’s rights are protected.”
Selected John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship participants will be awarded a monthly stipend of $1,500. Interested Law School 1 and 2L students are invited to apply by submitting their resumes, cover letters, and legal writing samples via email to info@houston.cair.com. The application deadline is June 2nd, 2023.
CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
