(HOUSTON, TEXAS – 5/5/15) – The Houston office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, condemns the attack Sunday on an anti-Islam event in Garland, Texas.
In a statement, CAIR-Houston said:
We condemn Sunday’s attack at an anti-Islam event in Garland, Texas. We reiterate our support of freedom of speech – even bigoted speech – and repudiate terrorism in any form.
Bigoted statements can never be an excuse for violence.
We thank the Garland Police Department for its swift actions to ensure public safety.
Unfortunately, human history shows us that hatred breeds more hatred and extremism leads to more extremism.
The organizers of the event in Garland are identified as an anti-Muslim hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
People of good will must work together to ensure that extremists of all faiths and backgrounds do not accomplish their malevolent goal.
