(HOUSTON, TX, 8/7/2019) – The Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today is urging the Galveston’s Police Department to fire the two horse mounted officers that led a handcuffed African-American suspect by a rope through the streets. Photos of the incident went viral on social media.

In a statement, CAIR-Houston Executive Director Lubabah Abdullah said:
“While we appreciate swift measures implemented in order to prevent this type of disturbing incident from recurring in the future, community trust in the officers involved in this incident has been irrevocably compromised. we are calling for the firing of the two officers involved. No human being should ever be humiliated and dehumanized in this manner.”
CAIR-Houston is urging further training for the Galveston police department and that a Galveston Park Board member drop trespassing charges made against Donald Neely, the man led by the rope.
Founder of Black Lives Matter: Houston, Ashton P. Woods said:
“We at Black Lives Matter: Houston (#BLMHOU) stand in solidarity with Donald Neely and are calling for the termination of the officers involved. We want the Galveston Police Department to be held fully accountable.”
The Houston-based Muslim civil rights organization also urges that mental health treatment and adequate housing be provided instead of criminalization for Neely, as well as all our vulnerable populations.
