CAIR Calls on CPAC Texas to Drop Viktor Orbán as Speaker After Racist, Anti-Muslim Remarks
Jul 27, 2022 | Texas Press Releases
(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/27/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) to drop Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as a speaker at its upcoming event in Texas after he made racist and anti-Muslim remarks during a recent speech.
Addressing supporters in Romania over the weekend, Orbán said he did not want Hungary to become a “mixed-race” country. “We are willing to mix with one another,” Orbán said, referring to Europeans, “but we do not want to become peoples of mixed race.” He warned that “Islamic civilization” is “constantly moving toward Europe.”
“By maintaining Viktor Orbán as a speaker at their event, CPAC Texas would send the troubling message that his racist, bigoted and fascist views are acceptable to Americans – they are not,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We urge CPAC Texas to remove Viktor Orbán from the list of speakers for the event and clearly repudiate his racist and Islamophobic remarks.”
He noted that Orbán was previously a speaker at the first CPAC-Hungary, organized by the Budapest-based Center for Fundamental Rights and the American Conservative Union. CAIR called on Americans to boycott that event.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
