CAIR Condemns ‘Irrational and Insidious’ Trump Tweet Threatening to Halt Immigration to U.S.
(HOUSTON, TX, 4/21/2020) – The Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned President Trump’s late-night tweet announcing that he intends to sign an executive order to “temporarily suspend immigration into the United States.”

In a statement, CAIR-Houston Lubabah Abdullah said:
“President Trump’s latest threat goes against the values of our nation which has been built upon immigrants. During the pandemic, thousands of immigrants are in the frontlines supporting our nation and its citizens as essential workers. We condemn this irrational and incredibly xenophobic decision to suspend immigration to the United States because of COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, we ask our community to urge congress to halt his attempt use the COVID-19 pandemic to advance his longstanding anti-immigrant agenda.”
CAIR notes that 29 percent of U.S. physicians and 23 percent of store pharmacists are foreign born.
Earlier this month, the Department of State announced that, despite a general suspension of visa processing, the agency would continue to process visas for medical workers, “particularly those working to treat or mitigate the effects of COVID-19.”
