Action Alert: Oppose SB 531 , Unnecessary “Anti-Sharia” Legislation
SB 531 by Sen. Donna Campbell is expected to come to the Senate floor on Thursday, May 21. This bill purports to provide narrow protections in the Family Code— but in fact, these bills are part of the “American Law for American Courts” program. Urge your senator to say NO to this anti-Muslim agenda.

_________ to oppose SB 531 by Campbell since state law and the Constitution
already trump foreign law. We have many significant issues facing the state of
Texas, so I wish the Texas Legislature would stop wasting time on unnecessary
legislation and would instead focus on addressing Texas’s real needs.

The conservative American Public Policy Alliance says American Law for American Courts is necessary “to protect…against the infiltration and incursion of foreign laws and foreign legal doctrines, especially Islamic Shariah Law,” but the equally conservative Acton Institute disagrees vehemently, saying: “Such laws are unnecessary since state law and the Constitution already trump foreign law. They also can’t be written to oppose only Sharia (that would be religious discrimination) so they are written in a broad way that has unintended consequences.
